From Afwanistan to Zanzibar...

Ever wonder where I got that, the little phrase under my blog title? You can blame Glenn Beck...

The guys on Beck's radio show love to poke fun at noted douchebag Adam Gadahn, known in fanatical Muslim circles as Gadahn the American or Azzam the American. He's an American of Jewish heritage who turned his back on his country and his upbringing to become an interpreter and stooge for Al Qaeda.

Yeah, really. This guy is a traitorous dirtball helping terrorists kill Americans by translating and by making propaganda videos. He also talks a lot like the comic actor Jim J. Bullock, which makes it really hard to take him seriously.

On May 29th, 2007 he released a video called "Al-Qaeda Video Warning to US by American Adam Gadahn", in which he listed five actions that then-President Bush and America as a whole must take in order to prevent future terrorist attacks.

1. "Pull every last one of your soldiers, spies, security advisors, trainers, attachés, … out of every Muslim land from Afghanistan to Zanzibar …" (only he says it "Afwanistan"....)
2. End "all support and aid, military, political, economic, or otherwise, to the 56-plus apostate regimes of the Muslim world, and abandon them to their well-deserved fate …"
3. "End all support, moral, military, economic, political, or otherwise, to the bastard state of Israel, and ban your citizens, Zionist Jews, Zionist Christians, and the rest from traveling to occupied Palestine or settling there. Even one penny of aid will be considered sufficient justification to continue the fight."
4. "… impose a blanket ban on all broadcasts to our region …"
5. "Free all Muslim captives from your prisons, detention facilities, and concentration camps, regardless of whether they have been recipients of what you call a fair trial or not."

Gadahn then warned that "your failure to heed our demands and the demands of reason means that you and your people will – Allah willing – experience things which will make you forget all about the horrors of September 11th, Afghanistan and Iraq".

The Beck show often plays the first demand section from the video, much to my amusement. Gadahn's over-the-top sibilant lisp and the way they mock him has brought me to tears on several occasions. Here's a sample:



So that, my friends, is where I got that from for the little blurb under the blog's title. I've had a few inquiries as to what I was talking about, so I figured I would fill in the blanks.

What am I listening to?

It's no secret that I despise commercial Top-40 radio. I make that point known every few weeks or so when I review the latest offerings of pop radio, and generally shred them.

In the car I usually listen to talk radio, for three reasons. Firstly, I'm by myself in the car most of the time & can listen to talk without fear of annoying a passenger. Secondly, it educates me and stimulates my cerebrum. It keeps me on top of the fluid situations of the day. And lastly, it keeps me awake. Remember, I get up at 0230AM for work and leave at 3AM. If I just listened to music, it's way too easy to just mentally tune it out and nod off into highway hypnosis, a sure way to end up in a ditch or wrapped around a tree. With talk radio, I have to pay attention to the discussion and keep alert, wrapping my mind around what the host is saying and formulating my own thoughts on the matters.

Now, at 3AM, one would think I'm listening to that mainstay of night-time talk, the tinfoil hat conspiracies and ghosts and aliens and what not talked about on Coast to Coast AM. You know, the Area 51 stuff first made popular by Art Bell and then taken over by George Noory. I listen occasionally but a lot of what they discuss there is what I consider kook-fringe stuff like alien abduction, remote viewings, and ghosts. Instead, I've started listening to the Midnight Trucking Radio Network, a really great conservative show hosted by Eric Harley & Gary McNamara out of Dallas & syndicated nationwide. I found them by accident about 4 months ago on, of all things, AM-760 WJR out of Detroit. Yes, Detroit; I'm picking it up from almost 700 miles away.
Once I get into Charleston I usually lose the feed, though not always, and switch over to All Night With Jason Smith on ESPN. Sure, the only sport I truly follow is hockey, but I like to stay up on things so that I don't sound like a dolt in a sports-related conversation. I find 99% of all sports talk to be excruciatingly dull but Smith delivers a fun, offbeat, laid back show without coming across as a pompous know-it-all.

During work hours (4AM to whenever) my radio time is limited. Occasionally I work alone and blessedly my MP3 player has an FM receiver built-in, so I'll often listen to my local FM talk station's morning show for news updates & stuff. I'm friends with the hosts on Facebook so it's not like I'm listening to strangers but rather spending the morning with folks I know. (Big shout out to Kelly Golden & Kyle Mercier at 94.3 WSC!)

At 9AM, it's Glenn Beck when I can. I know, it's kinda cliche and I'm anything but cliche. Beck is polarizing and the Left despises him. I think he's funny as hell most mornings, and very engaging. He's sincere, almost to a fault. His crying jags are melodramatic and he's a bit religious-preachy for me at times. But I really enjoy his show and actually prefer it to Rush Limbaugh.

Speaking of Rush.....I've always had a love-hate relationship with Rush. I started listening in the mid-90's and found his whole "America Held Hostage: Day (whatever )" intro to the show during the Clinton years was melodramatic, and his blatant ass-kissing of Newt Gingrich got old fast., always referring to him as "Mister Gingrich" in a smarmy hero-worship tone. At times he sounded like the Joseph Goebbells of the GOP, a mouthpiece for the Republican Party who would blindly agree with anything with an "R" after their name. However.......

Since Obama was coronated, I've buried my hatchet with Limbaugh. He's a lot funnier now, and I think the humor is what's warmed me up to him again. It's not so much that he's toned down his rhetoric, but that it's no longer just rhetoric to me. He declared war on a hostile adminsitration hell-bent on destroying the nation, and he's spot-on with his observations. We've got a lot more common ground now, and I listen to him on my way home, especially since he's up against Ryan Seacrest's sugar-coated crapfest on pop radio. My only real beef with Rush's show now is one that I've always had: his callers. Oh my GAWD what a sycophantic bunch of ass-kissing idol-worshipping goobers. The first 30 seconds of every call is a verbal fellatio session full of plattitudes and ball-fondling. Then he feigns humility, humbly thanks them, and then they drone on with some obvious point or other. I listen to the monologues and such and then flip the station when he takes calls.

After Rush, the fun continues. There's a brilliant show syndicated out of Tampa that you should check out. The Schnitt Show, hosted by Todd Schnitt, is funny, irreverent, insightful, and well worth the listen. If he's not carried locally for you, he's also on XM/Sirius on the Extreme Talk channel.

I don't listen to Hannity, mostly because no one locally carries it and because I can only listen to so much "serious" political talk in a day. I can't get past Michael Savage's voice; sorry. Likewise, I trouble listening to Mark Levin. I know most of you love the guy but his voice grated on me the few times I've been able to catch his show. Dude's a genius, and I liked what he had to say, but my local stations don't carry him and, well, the voice thing.....

BUT.....life is not all Talk Radio for Steve! No way!
I'm a music fan, and I do listen to a lot of stuff. And just for you guys here's a look at what I'm currently keeping stocked on the MP3 player. Most of it is 80's & 90's New Wave & Alternative, and for the bulk of you it'll be bands you've never heard of. That's okay; I like being different.

Open Line Friday, my ass...

As I’ve said before, I’m convinced that no human being alive today is quite so enamored of the sound of his own voice than the self-proclaimed “America’s Anchorman”, Rush Hudson Limbaugh III. Not since the bombastic orations of Nikita Khrushchev and Adolf Hitler has so much politically-charged hot air been expelled upon the masses.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m sure as hell no Liberal, and I’m not a Democrat, either. I tend to lean conservatively in my views. But Rush is so far to the right that he borders on fanaticism. Shoe-banging, gesticulating fanaticism…

I listen to his show on occasion, and while I agree with many of the things he says, a lot of his rhetoric is 100% pure anti-Democrat propaganda, as if the Republicans can do no wrong whatsoever. During the Clinton years, he’d open his show with “Under Siege: America Held Hostage Day XXX “, and referred to House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) exaltedly as “Mister Gingrich”, like he was royalty for being a Republican. Current Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is just called, you guessed it, Nancy Pelosi,or just Pelosi, with no honorific. Hey, didn’t ol’ Newton Leroy Gingrich have an ethics censure, and wasn’t he involved in numerous adulterous affairs on his 3 ex-wives? Then again, Rush had a very public drug problem… But don’t act like Republicans are above moral and ethical reproach, pal.

As far as he’s concerned, all Dems are evil and all Republicans walk on water. Typical partisan-politics bullshit, which is why the Federal Government (I mean, Feral Gummint) can’t get a fucking thing accomplished, but that’s a blog for another day, yet to be written.

Back to Limbaugh.

Each Friday he has what he calls, “Open Line Friday” which sounds like a great idea on paper. He pontificates about how Monday thru Thursday the show goes his way, with callers and discussions being solely on topics of his choosing, but on Fridays he “takes the huge risk” of letting us, the audience, the ignorant rubes, “control” the show by taking calls on whatever the listeners want to talk about.

Oh, bulllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllshit.

His call screeners have tighter assholes than Himmler’s SS stormtroopers. All week long they spoon-feed him an adoring public who kiss his ass like it was the Pope’s ring and then make some pro-Republican propaganda statement, after which Rush patronizes them and then makes as if to ask the opinion of his producer/Goebbels figure, a Mr. Snerdly. While I’ve never heard this Snerdly fellow on the air, I imagine he’d sound like other noted sycophant sidekicks like Ed McMahon and Paul Schaeffer.

Rest assured, dear readers, that his phone Gestapo rigidly controls Open Line Friday. If I were to call (and by some miracle actually get through) and tell the call screener that I wanted to tell His Conservativeness about Dubya being the Second Coming of The Messiah and that Hillary & Obama are the spawn of Satan, I’d be patched through post-haste.

But if on Open Line Friday I called and said I wanted to discuss the lack of decent TV coverage for hockey, I’d spend the next 3 hours on hold and then get disconnected. Oops!

It’s Open Line Friday so long as you toe the party line. Otherwise, you languish and get dropped.

I much prefer Glenn Beck’s parody, Closed Line Friday. Less rhetoric & pontification, and more intelligent discourse. Hooray Glenn Beck!
