You brought a paintball gun to a gunfight?

I suppose it should come as no surprise that a month ago, over the Halloween weekend, a man was shot and killed in the Third World streets of Chicago. After all, on any given weekend in Chicago, the number of people killed or wounded by gunfire in the allegedly safe, gun-controlled Democratic Socialist Workers Paradise rival or surpass those of Kabul or Baghdad or Damascus. This past Halloween weekend was actually tame by most standards for the Windy City. Instead of the usual 10 or 12 dead and 30+/- wounded by gunfire, it was two dead and 28 wounded. You think I exaggerate? 

Memorial Day weekend this year saw 12 killed and 43 wounded. The weekend before this year’s Halloween festivities, it was six killed and 28 wounded. In comparison, last year’s Halloween weekend saw four killed and 14 wounded. In all, 2014 was another dangerous year in the peaceful Democrat Utopia of The Windy City. The total number of people shot & killed was 390. The total who were shot and merely wounded was a staggering 2,229, for a total of 2,619 people shot in 2014.

In 2014, a person was shot in Chicago every 3 hours and 19 minutes. 

The weekend after Halloween this year? Four killed, another 15 wounded. One of the four dead was one J-Quantae Riles, (yes, the letter J, a hyphen, and the made-up word Quantae) a 14-year old boy who had only recently moved to Chicago from Virginia. The Monday after the Halloween weekend saw the murder of 9-year old Tyshawn Lee, lured into an alley and shot multiple times in what police are saying is a gang-related retaliation murder. The boy’s father has known gang ties and refused to cooperate with police. Six weeks later an arrest has been made in the boy’s death. The arrested suspect grew up with the boy’s mother, no less, but is in a rival gang than the boy’s father and was allegedly part of a roving hit squad that had been combing the streets for a while looking for worthy victim for retaliation.

Hope. Change. Death.

 But I digress. Back to the one man who was killed over Halloween. 

The fatal shooting happened Saturday night during an attempted armed robbery in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, according to Chicago Police. Hmmm, same neighborhood where young J-Quantae was murdered a week later. Move along; nothing to see here.

A man walked into a neighborhood bodega that included a currency exchange in the 7200 block of West 51st Street about 7 p.m. and pulled out a gun, threatened the employee behind the counter and announced a robbery. Right after that, things went sideways.

A customer in the store withdrew his own weapon and fired at the suspect, hitting him multiple times. The would-be robber, 55-year old Reginald Gildersleeve was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:10 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

  Gildersleeve had been arrested at least half a dozen times dating back to the 1980s. Several arrests had to do with narcotics, but most of the incidents involved theft or robbery. He was in and out of prison, with burglary convictions as recent as 2005. At 45 years of age, Mr. Gildersleeve was in his lifetime previously sentenced to a total of 35 years in prison for no less than 10 felonies. Wanna see his rap sheet? Go here. Coincidentally, he was also a former employee of the bodega and knew the owners well. This guy intended to rob people he knew, and knew well, who had employed him and trusted him. A pillar of the community, without a doubt.

Of note is the fact that Gildersleeve wasn’t shot by some random street thug packing heat. He was shot by a legal, licensed concealed-carry permit holder. In Illinois, and most particularly Chicago, that’s as rare as a leprechaun, unicorn, or honest politician. However, the Supreme Court finally forced Illinois, and more notably, Chicago, to accept the fact that the Second Amendment applies to its citizens.

What is even more extraordinary about this incident is that the gun Gildersleeve was brandishing in his robbery wasn’t even real. It was a paintball gun. Yes, a mother-effing paintball gun. However, it was authentic-looking enough for people to fear for their lives, and an armed citizen took decisive action to eliminate the threat. No charges will be filed against the armed citizen.

Of course, the family of our deceased habitual felon thinks he was an innocent saint who didn’t deserve to die and that the aforementioned citizen should be crucified upside down from a tree. Igbinosa Oronsaye, Gildersleeve’s stepson, told The Chicago Tribune the shooter overreacted in shooting multiple times.

 “Some people don’t actually know how to use guns,” Oronsaye said. “They go to firing ranges, but it’s not the same as a bullet going into someone’s body, it’s not the same as a bullet going into flesh. They should be able to wound first, kill next. He didn’t deserve to get shot multiple times.”

I can’t speak for Illinois, but here in South By God Carolina in order to obtain your concealed carry permit you must attend a training class that covers laws and legalities as well as practical shooting exercises. In other words, you do have to prove that you know how to use your weapon. I’d say that the guy who shot Gildersleeve knew how to use his weapon, since he hit his target and eliminated the threat. Wait….what? Oh, the state of Illinois also mandates a class for concealed carry applicants that includes a handgun safety course and range time that proves to the state-certified and licensed instructor that you do, in fact, know how to use your weapon? 

Iggy is right, though, when he says range shooting to gain and maintain firearms proficiency isn’t the same as shooting a human target. It’s not quite the same as shooting at a target carrying what, for all intents and purposes and appearances, is a weapon and is threatening surrounding citizens with harm in the commission of a felony and you’re in fear for your life. Paper doesn’t shoot back. Paper stays still. Does Iggy suggest we should practice instead on cadavers to get a better feel for what it’s like to shoot at actual flesh? Not exactly a practical way to gain firearms proficiency. Not everyone is a member of the Black Chicago Hunting Club and gains proficiency shooting other members of the community every weekend.

In every firearms training scenario I have ever undertaken, the instructors drilled into us to aim center mass and you shoot to eliminate the threat, and if that takes more than one round so be it. You don’t aim to wound, you aim center mass, ie: the largest area of the target, to improve your odds of hitting it. Your adrenaline is going to flood your entire system. Your breathing is going to speed up and you might shake a bit. You’ll probably feel like you have to pee. Welcome to a life or death combat shooting situation. You try to get fancy and aim for the arm and you’ll likely miss, as the arm is a lot narrower. And only on TV or in a movie is some cool, calm, collected gunslinger going to shoot the gun out of a culprit’s hand. That, dear reader, is farcical and utter crap. The real world simply does not happen that way. Hate to ruin the illusion. As the marksmanship record of the New York Police Department shows, when you are shooting at an actual human and under duress you miss a lot. And besides, in addition to the difficulty in hitting the target, there are damned few places you can shoot a human being deliberately and be sure of just merely wounding them Hollywood-style. Anywhere in the head, neck and pretty much the entire major-organ-encasing torso would be off limits. Both arms and legs have major blood vessels that, if ruptured, more likely than not will result in death. A lot of people have exsanguinated from a simple wound to the thigh. The femoral artery, once severed, will bleed you out in about five minutes. 

But back to the oh-so-sage Iggy.

Oronsaye also said the shooter needed to be punished for killing a member of the community.

“You just took a brother, you just took a father from a lot of people. Somebody’s got to answer for that,” he said.

Um, someone did. Reginald Gildersleeve answered for it. He’s the one who took it upon himself to make the decision to rob that bodega. He was the one who took a paintball gun and brandished it to make his victims think it was an actual weapon. Member of the Community is a pretty simple title. Everyone who lives there is a member of the community. The people he chose to rob are members of the community. He answered for it and paid for his folly with his life. 

This is not an isolated incident, actually. People are stopped from committing crimes against peaceful law-abiding citizens all the time by armed citizens with concealed carry permits. The liberal leftist news media simply chooses not to make mention of it unless forced to.

Two weeks before Halloween, just down the road from my mom’s house in North Charleston, 19-year old Joshua Jermaine Davis decided it was in his best interest to cinch up his hoodie to conceal his face, pull out a gun, and rob a Waffle House at 4:30 in the morning. He was confronted by a licensed concealed carry holder as he exited the building and told to drop his weapon, and instead of doing so raised his weapon at the citizen. The restaurant’s cash drawer was laying on the ground next to his body when the police arrived moments later. He was said to be breathing, but unresponsive at the time. He was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina, where he later died. Of course, there were those close to him who got their faces in the news saying he didn’t deserve to die and was a great kid, yadda yadda. A great kid whose Facebook page was full of pictures of guns and drugs. Spare me.

The Chicago Police, to my knowledge, never released the name of the citizen who shot Gildersleeve. Most likely because of the fear of retaliation. Payback is king in peaceful Chicago. And, God forbid, if the shooter was white, then that gives the agitators of BLM to protest (ie: riot, loot, and destroy). In North Charleston, the names of everyone involved were available within 24 hours. And, since the armed citizen was also black, that gives BLM nothing to riot about. 

A couple weeks later, also here in South Carolina and 10 miles from the above-mentioned Waffle House, two guys decided to break into a home in Ladson to rob it. What they didn’t know was that a 13-year old boy was home inside the residence and he became suspicious when the two men parked behind his house. As they tried to break in, fearing for his life, the boy took his mother’s gun and opened fire through the door. One of the would-be thieves returned fire as they fled. Responding officers found a .45 caliber handgun behind the house that did not belong to the family. One of the men was hit three times, and their car was also hit several times. Upon arrival to the hospital the driver, Ira Bennett, told officials that someone had randomly shot at their car on the Interstate. His partner, Lamar Brown, died from his wounds. Both Bennett and Brown have extensive criminal histories, according to the State Law Enforcement Division. Bennett has been convicted of assault with intent to kill, pointing a firearm at a person and third-degree burglary. He has also been convicted of possession of a controlled substance, manufacturing and distributing a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. He has now has been charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Brown's convictions included six felony drug charges. He had also been convicted of unlawful carrying of a weapon, disorderly conduct and trespassing. Stellar citizens, indeed.

Now, while I am a strong advocate for an armed citizenry and for concealed carry for personal protection, it does, indeed, come with a hefty responsibility. You can’t just go playing vigilante. You have to be in genuine fear for your life or the lives of those in close proximity before resorting to deadly force. The customer in that Chicago bodega saw a weapon that looked real and feared for the lives of the employees and himself. The man outside the Waffle House saw a weapon and told the thief to drop it, and fired when the thief raised his weapon to fire. That kid inside that house was terrified and justified.

Not every situation demands action.

A woman in Michigan, a licensed conceal-carry holder, was just brought up on criminal charges after she saw a shoplifter fleeing a security guard at a Home Depot store and get into a car, and she opened fire on the car in the parking lot in an attempt to shoot out the tires. Seriously. It was a shoplifter, not a serial killer. There was no evidence that the dude was armed. She wasn’t in immediate danger.  This was a no-go, a complete failure on the part of the citizen. 

In September, two men in the Houston area were in the process of carjacking an unarmed man’s truck at a gas station when a would-be hero rushed in to ostensibly save the day. He drew his weapon and began firing, and did NOT hit his intended target. Instead of hitting the carjackers, the citizen hit the victim in the head. Yes, he shot him in the head. 

After he realized what he did, the wannabe hero wasn’t so brave anymore. He quickly policed up the shell casings from his gun, and left the scene before the authorities could come and identify him and worse, without making sure the man he shot was okay. The bad guys got away, and the victim is recovering. The truck was found abandoned two blocks over, and a shattered driver’s side window and blood inside the vehicle suggests that the shooter may have hit one of the thieves after all, but so far neither they nor the shooter have been found. Another no-go failure.

Look, while it may indeed be our right as citizens to own and carry a firearm, it is also a tremendous responsibility. Know your laws. Know when you can and can’t shoot, and when you should and shouldn’t. And know your weapon. Know it by feel. Know your ability with it, and to draw and engage accurately. Know how to quickly reload if you have to. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions, so tread carefully.

Third World Cities in a First World Country

In the Windy City the breeze hides the smell of bodies in the streets

As America celebrated what used to be Independence Day this past July 4th weekend, word was received from The People's Socialist Republic of Chicagoland that there'd been some crimes committed over the holiday.

By crimes, I mean that according to city hall 82 people had been shot and 14 people killed in greater Chicago.

Digest that for a minute. This isn't Afghanistan. This isn't Iraq. This isn't a combat zone populated by US troops. This is a major American city, a city with the most asaninely strict gun control laws in the land, prohibiting law-abiding citizens from exercising their Second Amendment right to bear arms for self-defense.

Most of the violence is taking place in a small section of the South Side.  Police call it Terror Town, a 2-block by 4-block patch of South Shore where gang conflicts have continuously erupted into shootings. A police audit of gangs identified 59 in the city with more than 650 factions on the South, West and North sides. Terror Town lies in the South Chicago police district. According to department statistics, the district had 59 shootings through May of this year compared to 37 during the first five months of 2013, an increase of 59 percent. But the problem isn't just confined to this zone; it's city-wide.

It's becoming an epidemic in cities with a long-term history of Democrat rulership. Poverty, high abortion rates, gang violence, an exceedingly high dependence on governmental handouts, and murders galore. And of course, no one is willing to tell the cops a thing.

Think this weekend is an anomaly in Chicago? Think again.

Let's go back to Easter weekend of this year. There were 45 people shot, 8 of them fatally.

The weekend before that? There were 36 shot, with four of them killed.

The weekend before that? Two killed and 25 more wounded.

It was just as grim last year. The July 4th holiday weekend of 2013 saw 72 people shot over the course of just four days according to local media. Of that 72, 12 were killed. And on Father's Day weekend in June of 2013, it was 7 dead and 41 wounded.

Over Father's Day weekend in 2010, 54 people were shot in Chicago between Friday night and Monday morning. Ten of the victims were killed. In Chicago, nothings says Holiday Weekend like a murder spree.

It's not just Chicago, though. At a Mother's Day parade this year in New Orleans, 21 people were shot and wounded. Police named one suspect, Akein Scott, 19, of New Orleans. New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas told reporters that Scott was "no stranger to the criminal justice system." According to The Associated Press, Scott had previously been arrested for illegal possession of a stolen firearm, resisting arrest, and carrying a weapon while in possession of heroin. Bear in mind, you need to be 21 to legally possess a handgun but criminals care not a whit for the law, so spare me the Liberal Mantra about more gun laws and how they'll help. The laws currently in place, if and when they are enforced, do not dissuade criminals from being criminals.


How appropriate that as I write this the news comes across that former New Orleans Mayor Ray "Chocolate City" Nagin was just sentenced to 10 years for corruption and fined $82,000 restitution.

Compare these violent streets of Third World America to actual combat zones in actual Third World countries:

August 6, 2011 - 30 American servicemembers, including 22 Navy SEALs, were killed along with 7 Afghan special forces and an Afghan civilian interpreter when their transport helicopter was shot down in Wardak province.

March 1–18, 2002 - Eight U.S. soldiers were killed and another 72 were wounded in Operation Anaconda. Most of the casualties were sustained during the Battle of Takur Ghar when a U.S. transport helicopter was shot down and another one was so badly damaged that it had to land or risk crashing also.

June 28, 2005 - 19 U.S. special operations troops were killed in Operation Red Wings. Three of them, Navy SEALs, were killed when their four-man team was ambushed in the mountains of Kunar province. The fourth team member (Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell)  was missing in action for four days before being rescued. After the initial ambush the team called for reinforcements and a quick reaction force dispatched. As they approached the ambush site, insurgents fired an RPG at the helicopter carrying the QRF, shooting it down. All 16 on board were killed. Eight of them were SEALs while the other eight were members of the Army's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, the Nightstalkers.

So while the military has had its bad days it's worse back home.

Detroit, Michigan was once the world's richest city. Now it's a devastated wasteland filled with decaying empty buildings, packs of feral dogs roaming the streets, and entire abandoned neighborhoods that are being used as body dump sites for homicides. In my lifetime I'd never seen an American city literally go bankrupt. A city that once had over 2 million residents now has less than 700,000, and with the decreased tax base, city services began to fail. City functions as simple as street lights required loans from the government just to turn them on, with half burned out by last year.

The death rate for children under the age of 18 is higher in Detroit than in any other comparable major city.  Surprisingly, homicide is only the second greatest cause of this;  infant death is the primary culprit, and that’s only if they make it out of the womb. Detroit is a city where 31 percent of pregnancies result in abortion putting Detroit on level with Vietnam, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. That's pretty much one in three pregnancies terminated.

Like I always say, insanity is best defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Rather than vote out the problematic leadership, rather than change the tax laws and incentives to lure business back, rather than getting people to depend on themselves and not the government, rather than turning the criminals in to the police for arrest and prosecution, rather than taking care of familial responsibilities....the people of these cities would rather vote in the same corrupt politicians, accept and expect handouts, refuse to cooperate with the police, and breed like flies and either abort the fetus or expect the state to pay for it.

 Meanwhile, the President (who sometimes claims to be from Chicago) is either golfing, vacationing, or like today, off fund-raising for fellow Leftists.

Wake the hell up, America.

America's Left-Controlled Killing Fields

How most people view their surroundings in Liberal cities

As you gentle readers may recall, less than three weeks ago I wrote on how the most dangerous cities in America were controlled by The Left. I was also asked by reader, fellow blogger, and Army buddy Jim as to why Chicago wasn't included on that list. I was curious as well, and then got to thinking that these 10 cities were listed because of the number of crimes per 100,000 population. Most of those cities were relatively small to mid-size as far as major metropolitan areas go, with the population of Detroit declining as folks move the hell out or simply get killed off by their neighbors. The larger cities simply have that many more people to absorb the crime statistics.

You still have Left-controlled major cities where I wouldn't feel the least bit safe walking the streets outside of the major tourist spots. I've been to Boston (Mayor: Democrat Tom Menino) dozens of times and I love the city but wouldn't want to wander most of it unarmed. Philadelphia (Mayor: Democrat Michael Nutter), or as I call it Filthadelphia? I wouldn't feel safe away from the tourist spots in The City of Brotherly Love. Los Angeles, recently turned over to Democrat Eric Garcetti after the ruinous reign of Democrat Antonio Villarigosa (AKA Tony Villar) is just too weird for me to even attempt unarmed. And as long as that lunatic Bloomberg continues to run gun-free New York as a nanny state I'll never visit.

I don't blame the regular beat cops. For example,  Boston has some damned fine cops. They did a hell of a job after the Marathon bombing. If not for the fine troops of the NYPD, it would be as bad as Chicago.

I don't say these things out of a sense of paranoia. Far from it. I don't sleep with my Walther under my pillow, nor do I carry it 24/7. I say it as a former soldier and Military Police professional who simply doesn't trust the denizens of our larger municipalities under the jurisdiction of the Left away from areas brightly lit and heavily patrolled. I don't fear cities or crowds. I'm not some country bumpkin.

I was born in the nation's capital, Washington DC. That said, you couldn't pay me enough to live there. This is a city that sent a mayor to jail for crack use and then re-elected him when he got out. Then again, he was a Democrat. Current Democrat mayor Vincent Gray currently presides over the cesspool that is the heart of our nation's governing center. Back in March, they had 13 people shot in just one single incident. But it's a gun-controlled city, y'know. Up the road in Democrat Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's Baltimore, which we've already discussed at great length, it's like Fallujah but with fewer mosques. The weekend of June 21-23 of this year (yes, 3 weeks ago) no fewer than 20 people in Baltimore were shot in 12 incidents, and 8 of them died. Stay classy, B'more. No wonder the locals call it Bodymore, Murderland. The body counts just keep going up.

That takes us to Chicago. Two words: No Way. Three words: No mothereffing way. Well, maybe if the Chicago Blackhawks picked me up at the airport and drove me directly to a game and then directly back to O'hare to un-ass the city and go home.

Nothing has improved in Chicago since Obama's former lapdog Rahm Emanuel took over from Richard M. Daley, son of Richard J. Daley, both of whom were crooked as a pig's pecker. Oh, wait...all these guys are Democrats. It really should come as no surprise that despite what the pundits say, Chicago is the deadliest city in America. This despite a $55 million program to curb gun violence but in reality just buys votes and cons taxpayers...

On this July 4th holiday weekend, where we celebrate our freedoms as Americans, in a city that has taken away its citizens' right to self-defense against thugs and scumbag criminals, in a city that has allegedly outlawed guns (meaning only outlaws have them), 74 people were shot and 12 of them were killed. A jumbo jet crashed in San Francisco and fewer people died than in Chicago gun violence.

Joe Walsh of Illinois Review perhaps summed it up the best:

Seventy-four people were shot and 12 were killed in the city of Chicago over the July 4th extended holiday weekend. Amazingly this gun violence occurred despite Chicago having the nation's most stringent gun control laws. Why then? Why this continued gun violence in Chicago?

The answer is pretty simple. Most of the shooters and killers this weekend are young gang bangers, young thugs who have absolutely no value of human life. Well, how did that come to be? Because one's values historically have come from one's parents, families, churches, and communities and its been the policy of Democrats over many years to replace these institutions of the family, the church, the neighborhood, and the community with the institution of the government.

And that's what they've done. The vast majority of this weekend's shooters and killers have no fathers, come from broken families, don't attend church, and aren't involved in their community. They are dependent upon government. They have no values and no respect for life. 

They are taught by the government and the Al Sharpton's of the world that nothing is their fault. Racism is to blame for everything. So they are not responsible for their own actions. The white man is.

None of this should surprise us. It's time we call the Democrats and liberals out for what they've done. Don't cede the ground of compassion to them anymore. Their misguided and harmful policies over the years have destroyed families, schools, and communities and created a destructive dependency on government. Outside of the killers themselves, liberal social policy is responsible for all this gun violence. The Democrats have ruined entire generations of urban Americans.

See? It's not just me. I'm certainly not the only one who sees this. And really, it's not just in big cities. In my little town we've had a chronic violent crime problem for years. No one seems to blame the mayor who's been at the helm since 1989 and will be at the helm at least till 2017's inaugurals...I toss a lot of blame upon a seemingly ineffectual constabulary. The city finally fired its long-time police chief after we started the year with several homicides and shootings. A new chief has yet to be named. Our newly-installed county sheriff, a Democrat, hasn't seemingly done much to quell the violence, nor did his Democrat predecessor. When I found 2 holes in my kitchen walls from a .40 caliber round that went through one wall and lodged in the other from a drive-by conducted by one local gang against another as they walked down my street, I had to practically walk the 2 responding deputies through what to do. I went next door and asked the neighbor myself if he'd heard any gunfire that day, which he had about an hour before I got home from work that day. After they followed me over next door to get a statement, I then had to suggest to them that they check the street for uncollected spent brass, of which they found six casings. Over 21 years since I last strapped on a duty belt and ran a patrol, and I had to show the local cops how to conduct a simple investigation. Couple days later during a followup visit by a couple detectives, I had to point out to one cop that the plates on his unmarked cruiser had expired four months prior. Fivemonths later they've not made any progress, not that I really expected any.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. The sooner you idiots stop voting Democrat and take responsibility for your actions and your lives, the sooner you can stop living in fear of dying in the street like it's some Third World rat's nest you live in and not the United States. But why do that when it's easier to blame everyone else and keep on cashing them gubmint checks?

And seriously, banning guns isn't any sort of answer, you morons. It takes away the right of self-defense from people who then become prey for the wicked. And if guns become unavailable, criminals just turn to other means, like knives. Just ask the Brits, who have a rampant knife crime problem because there are no guns per se for criminals to use.
