On a recent trip through Charlotte, NC, I was priveleged to share the flight with a group of Marine recruits headed to Paris Island. The flight attendant announced them at the end of the flight and asked for (and got) a round of applause for them.
I personally make an attempt to speak to a soldier on every trip I take. You're bound to see one on almost every flight. I thank them for their service. Plain and simple, no frills.
